18th C. Pastoral Scene

National Trust

The National Trust has a vast collection of objects and artworks under its care, including over 12,000 paintings. Regular condition checks allow the Trust to prioritise works which require conservation treatment, whether that is a high profile masterpiece or a decorative painting forming part of a historic interior scheme in one of the properties, as was the case for the following project.

The painting is set into a mantle above a fireplace at Thorington Hall, Suffolk and is believed to date from the 18th century. The fireplace has long since been out of use, but natural aging and environmental factors had affected the painting. The boards had been compromised by woodworm, damp and aging of the wood. The joins between the boards had failed and the panel was in three sections on arrival at the studio. The boards were treated individually before being rejoined.

To ensure its long term preservation once returned to the property a panel tray was made to securely house the painting. The panel is supported from the middle board which had the most strength. Flexible balsa battens offer support to the panel while allowing it to move in response to environmental conditions.
